Pete Taylor

In 1975 Pete Taylor led Coach Dale Williams Bulldogs to an 8-2 football season. He eclipsed Kennon Taylor’s WHS passing record of 1,084 yards by amassing 1,536 yards with a phenomenal completion percentage of 69%. His 101 completions in 147 attempts included 14 touchdowns. He also passed for four two point conversions and ran two tallies himself.
Pete also paced the Waycross cagers to a third place finish in one of Georgia’s strongest regions, 3-AAA. The Dogs ranked behind Savannah High and Beach with a sparking 20-4 record.
Lettering and excelling in four sports, he won the region high jump competition and went to the state playoffs as a junior. He was also a good baseball player.
Earning a scholarship to Florida A & M, Pete went on to play two sports (football and basketball) at the Tallahassee University. As a junior in the 1978-79 season, he ranked 27th in the nation in scoring (23.1) and 14th in rebounding (12.0). He joined Lawrence Butler of Idaho State, Larry Bird of Indiana State and Bill Cartwright of San Francisco as the only four players in the country to rank nationally in both categories.
Pete’s record of 1,536 yards was surpassed in 1982 when Todd Williams passed for 1,693 yards in a fifteen game season.
