Bobby Harrison
Inducted 1995
He was one of the greatest running backs Waycross High ever had. Bobby brought the fans to their feet with his superb ability to run in the open field.
One of Bobby’s accolades is the rare distinction of winning five varsity letters in a single season.
In the 1947-48 school years; he was captain and MVP of the football team; he consistently led the basketball team in scoring; he never lost the 220 or high hurdles in district track meets; he was one of the baseball team’s top hitters while playing third base; also, he was a tough competitor on Melba Williams’ tennis squad..
A defensive demon at end (although he weighted only 122 pounds), he was selected to the SGFA All-Conference team in 1945. He returned to end again in 1946 and then moved to halfback position in 1947 and 1948. His 19 touchdowns in 1948 were only two short of the school record of 21. He had five of those TDs in one game against Jesup that season.
Bobby finished his high school career with a total of 34 touchdowns to his credit and left a legacy of athletic excellence.
He received a football scholarship to Wofford College at Spartanbug, SC in 1949. During the 1950 season, he earned Little All America honors while leading the South Georgia College team to a berth in the Golden Isles Bowl. The 1951 season found him playing at the University of Georgia.
Bobby entered the Marine Corps in 1952 and was chosen for the All-Service team in 1953 and 54 while playing for Camp Pendleton California.
Bobby retired in 1987 as a district manager with Jensen-Salsbery Lab (Kansa City, MO). He had three children, Susan, Wes and Julie. Bobby and His wife Elsa lived in Daytona Beach, Florida until his death.
