Waycross-Ware County Sports Hall of Fame

Willie F. (Bill) Cobb, Jr.
Inducted 2026

Some people move on from the game. Others stay in it—finding new ways to give back at every stage of life. Bill Cobb is one of those people.

As a young athlete in Ware County’s recreation program, he quickly stood out, earning All-Star and All-State recognition while helping his teams achieve success at every level.

At Waycross High School, he became a leader in both basketball and baseball. He helped lead his teams to Sub-Region Championships, earning recognition for his all-around play and delivering in key moments, including a game-winning RBI that secured a title.

He continued his career at Savannah State College, competing in both sports, winning a conference championship, and earning a Defensive Award for his performance. But what sets Bill apart is what came after.

He continued playing, coaching, mentoring, and officiating, staying connected to the game in every way possible. From middle school coaching to contributing to a region championship high school team, to decades of officiating across multiple sports, his presence has been constant. He has also invested in young athletes through community programs and his work with the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club.

Bill credits Coach Russell Ellington for teaching him that academics must come first, a lesson he carried throughout his life.

The Waycross-Ware County Sports Hall of Fame honors Willie F. “Bill” Cobb, Jr. for a lifetime spent giving back to the game and to the people who play it.
