Debbie Neugent Taylor
Inducted 2026
Every great team has a player who may not always seek the spotlight, but you feel her presence every time the game is played.
For the Ware County Gatorettes, that player was Debbie Neugent Taylor.
Debbie played the rover position, one of the most demanding roles on the floor. It required speed, awareness, and constant movement, and she brought all three. On offense, she pushed the pace and created opportunities. On defense, she made life difficult for everyone she guarded.
If you ask those who watched her play, they’ll tell you her impact showed up most on the defensive end. She had a way of disrupting rhythm, forcing mistakes, and turning effort into momentum for her team.
Her play earned her recognition as Most Improved Player, All-Region honors, Outstanding Rebounder, and selection to the All-Tournament Team. But ask Debbie about those years, and she’ll quickly point you back to her teammates.
She credits early coaches Shelby Griffin and Gladys Taylor for laying the foundation, often going beyond what was expected to give their players more opportunities to grow. At Ware County High School, Coach Frank Harrell built on that foundation, instilling discipline and a competitive mindset that shaped the program.
Debbie remains proud of those teams, not because of what they accomplished individually, but because of what they built together.
The Waycross-Ware County Sports Hall of Fame honors Debbie Neugent Taylor for the energy, grit, and team-first spirit she brought to Ware County basketball.
