He lettered in football, basketball and track at Waycross High School in 1942-43-44 and received a grid scholarship to the University of Georgia.
He lettered at the University of Georgia in 1944, 1949-50-51 and was captain of the 1951 varsity. He was all SFGA in football and all South Georgia in basketball. He was all SEC in football in 1951 and named the most valuable back in that year.
Claude was a fourth- round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers where he played defensive back in 1952-53.
While in military service he was a member of the Seventh Fleet all- stars in 1947 and was most valuable player in the China Bowl that year. He was also chosen on the all-service team and Atlantic Fleet all-stars in 1949.
He is a member of the University of Georgia all- time football team and the 1951-52 Georgia Tech National Championship all- opponent team
