Waycross-Ware County Sports Hall of Fame

Charles Beverly
Inducted 1987
He was perhaps the finest baseball player to wear the colors of Waycross High School.
He was an all state American Legion baseball selection in 1944-45-46 and was named to the all state plus the All American High School team in 1946. He was chosen for the Esquire All East team, the only player from Georgia, in 1946. The East squad was managed by Honus Wagner with Luke Appling and Mike Tresh of the Chicago White Sox as coaches. Practices were staged at Wrigley Field and Comisky Park in Chicago. Charlie batted .579 in five game of the 1946 state high school tournament in which Waycross lost to a team from Macon in the finals.
While furloughed from his job with the railroad in 1949, he played with the Waycross Bears of the Georgia-Florida League and Gainesville of the Florida State League.
He was recalled by the railroad after the season and finished his career with local semi-pro teams.
